How to get success in a Group discussion?

The group discussion is found to be one among the rounds in almost all types of interview. This has been included to test the candidate in terms of their expressive style and their intellectual skills. This is more of a impromptu speech where the people would be asked to speak on the spot with only a little time left to prepare.

You also have various things to take care during a GD. Having a clear view on the evaluation of the GD would help you in understanding the tricks for getting success in a GD. Since the group discussion round is basically to see how much capable you are in handling a discussion with your language skills, you must work well enough to develop your communication skills.

Three phases of a group discussion

After a topic is given, you might struggle enough in starting. You might get confused about the points that are to be discussed. For the ease of the candidates, let us divide the GD into three major phases.

1. Introduction/Initiation

2. Body of a GD
3. Conclusion/Summarisation

Introduction/Initiation

You are supposed to provide a small intro of yourself before you start the GD. This can happen either at the beginning (before the topic was announced), or later.

Hey friends! This is me "Your name" from "College name". I am going to share my views on "The topic" - this is something really common.

Even the evaluators would get bored if you start away this way.

The initialization to a GD is simply a double-edged sword. It may either bring an positive or a negative impression.

Most of the people tend to start the GD in a most common way as-

Hello friends! The topic given to us was "leaders is born or made". My point is that the leaders are born because...."

Isn't it boring? Yup right. Then think about the evaluator.

Every one knew that the person who initiates the GD has high points in terms of the evaluation by the panelists. But also remember that initiating the GD is also has several disadvantages to get noticed.

There are certain tips to make your initial step in the GD to be impressive. Have a look at them -

1. Quotes
2. Story
3. Facts

When there are so many eyes on a single person with their expectations accompanied by also the eagerness, the trick of making the spot comfortable lies in your hands. So here I have sorted out some clean ways to start the GD.

When a candidate chooses to start a GD, the thing is he/she is going to grab the sole attention of the panelists and the fellow members. The candidate can make the favor only if he had made is initiation in a powerful manner. The initiation would also show your communication aspects, courage, intellectual skill to the panelists. Then just think of how should a initiation be?

1. Quotes

Citing a quotation said by a great person or even the rhyming lines that you could relate to the given topic will surely fetch the attraction of the judges.

For example -

Topic Quote
Should the censor board be abolished? Hidden apples are always sweet
Leaders are born or made Only a good follower can become a great leader
Love marriage vs arranged marriage Marriages are made in heaven
Love marriages make the heaven

2. Story

Everyone likes to hear stories and imagine the reaction of the group hen you tell a story. Ha ha funny right. Believe me that this  trick will work out.

For example-

'Attitude is everything.'

A balloon vendor was selling helium balloons. A child questioned him whether the blue-colored balloon would go up as high as a green-colored one. The man replied - "it is the matter that is present inside the balloon and not the color of the balloon which made it go high" .

'Circumstances makes a man.'

When an egg and a potato is put inside the boiling water, what happens? The potato becomes soft but the egg becomes harder. Its a simple example which means a lot. Than the circumstances, our capabilities and the potentials are responsible for the outcomes.

These are some simple examples that could give a vivid idea on using the stories for the topics.

3. Facts

The facts that I try to note here is nothing but the relevant data such as , some census data, numerical data, historical events, dates, etc.

For example -

Topic - 'Is NOTA (None Of The Above) an important choice for the election'

Fact - The figure, however, was lower than 1.5% of the total voters in 2013. Around 50,000 voters opted for NOTA in Delhi; 3.56 lakh in Chhattisgarh; 5.9 lakh in Madhya Pradesh and 5.67 lakh in Rajasthan.

This may make the evaluator feel that you have some knowledge on the topic in depth. Also it has a disadvantage, that when you quote some wrong data or facts and the other person or the interviewer has spotted it, you have your own grave dug.

Am sure that these simple ways could fetch you a remarkable first impression. So make a note on these tips to rock in the start of the GD.

Body of a GD

Consider that you have made your initial speech perfectly as said above. Then the second phase - Body of a GD can be moved without much effort. Many still think that people who had initiated the GD would always be selected. But this is just a myth and not real at any cost.

The GD consists of a group of 8-12 members approximately. Not everyone could become the initiator and this can't be made possible. So then what should the rest do? The body of the GD is the very important phase where almost two-third of the evaluation takes place. That has the key for your selection.

All you need to have note during this phase is that -

1. Have proper eye contact.
2. Reveal only the relevant points.
3. Don't speak toooo much.

Be sure you put your feet in the right place and then stand firm.

This is a noteworthy point. Many topics in the GD will be in the format of Far and against. So you must first decide the side which you are going to support and then gather the points. You must be in favor of only one side and you can't play a double-sided game here.

This phase has a major role as it is holding 2/3rd of the marks for the evaluation. The evaluators will notice the body language, communication skills and also the presence of mind. Since this round is particularly made for testing your communication skills you must know - How to improve your Communication Skills?

Conclusion/Summarisation

The conclusion has to made very simple and make a note that your conclusion should not arise any controversies to your previous talks. Make a smooth conclusion which is more of the summarisation of what you spoke earlier. Have a look at the sample beneath.

I feel grateful (thankful) to be a part of this discussion. To my view, this Group Discussion was really informative. The topic "topic" is more interesting as it sounds. I chose that "your choice" because "your reason". Thank you for this wonderful discussion friends.

We have already seen a lot about evaluation part of the GD with the Do's and Don'ts. Also, make sure that you are aware of the frequent topics of group discussion. We have now had a complete view on the preparation for a GD from top to bottom.
