Once, I was making my presence for a campus interview. Having cleared the preliminary rounds, I was moved forward to proceed with the group discussion. There were 12 persons in a team and there were a total of 16 teams.

Some important points to be taken care
What if you were not the first person to talk?
What if you were not allowed to take notes?
The topic given to us was - "Leaders are born or made?"
Also know about the kinds of GD topics and also the ones which are frequent enough. whenever you are provided with a topic, there are always many ways to go as per the kinds of the group discussion topic. Also make sure that you take note on some of the frequent topics in a group discussion. There is a high chance of getting selected if you are clear with the way of preparing for the given topic. The Do's and Don'ts of the GD are to be noted so that this could save from the edge.
My Story/Experience
We were given 2 minutes to think and meanwhile I was ready with my pen and paper for sorting the points I was thinking. No sooner than the HR looked at the watch, there were 2 people quarreling between themselves. I was not able to figure out what went wrong with them and later I understood that they both were trying to initiate the GD."Oh my God!"- I thought to myself. I have never seen any intro this way. Hopefully, they both might have thought that person who initiates the GD has the weightage. Yeah it is right, but only to a certain extend.
Among the 12 persons, I was not given even a single second to raise my voice. I paused myself hardly for 15 minutes. Even after that, I was not given a chance to speak. Boosting myself, I was left in the situation to forcibly take my chance.
If you were with the prior knowledge on the Evaluation of the group discussion, then the day would be yours.
There was a boy next to me and he was the one who never gave chance for anyone to speak. There were 2 more persons of my kind- who had not got any chance to voice their opinion. After 15 minutes, the boy to the left of mine started to speak as usual and what I did was --- "Hey! I am really sorry to interrupt you, and I dint mean to do that, but i do have something to say.." Now, I became the center of attraction and I was feeling free top express my views without any disturbances. I spoke only 3 points which were more accurate to the given topic. I also stated quotes and examples wherever required.
And finally, you know what, I got selected. To our surprise, either the girl who initiated the GD or the boy who was speaking too many points were not selected.
Some important points to be taken care
1. Present yourself in a neat way (sitting manner, hand positions, etc).2. Keep eye contact with everyone.
3. Don't ever try to fight with anyone. (This is a discussion not debate).
4. State quotes, stories, examples wherever necessary.
5. Don't add too many points. Be crisp in your point.
What if you were not the first person to talk?
There is a myth that the person who initiates and concludes the GD will have the high chance of getting selected. But this is just a hint and it is not something which you can worry about.1. Don't get disappointed, do maintain the eye-contact with the speaker.
2. Take your own time - but make sure that when you talk, there must be valid points in your speech.
3. Take constant turns to speak.
4. Don't debate.
What if you were not allowed to take notes?
It won't be always this case where you will be allowed to take your pen and pad. So make sure that you are prepared for that.1. Be clear on your topic (Know your topic well).
2. Remember 5-6 key points.
3. Relate a story or a quote.
4. Make points from the other speaker's thought.
5. Provide some data (related real life incidents) if you knew.
