Tips for Final year Computer Engineering project - Overview

Without project, the Engineering course is incomplete. Project is an important credit giving part in the Engineering course. Also, the purpose of doing project at the end of the course is to make you ready to run with the implementation of what you have learnt through the course.

Most of the institutes that provide courses on different technologies and languages have also included 'project' as one of their part. There are so much importance that lies with the project.

Mini project

In most of the colleges, mini project competitions are conducts so that this would help the students to gain some knowledge on hoe a project must be, how it must be designed, how to implement it, etc. This is something really useful as students can come to know about the projects earlier. There are some who tend to buy the project from a center and I feel its too much to do for a mini project. Also, since students were also asked to do the documentation part, this would give them better experience.

Computer Science related Domains for project

Most of the students get struct at the very beginning thinking where they could start. Also, there are not sure about the various domains that exist. Since I belong to the department of CSE, I have attatched the domains that are related to me. And I will make sure to include the domains for other departments too.

1) Data Mining
2) Web Mining
3) E-Commerce and Web Technology
4) Data Warehouse
5) Biometrics
6) Cloud computing
7) Adhoc Networks
8) Green computing
9) Embedded systems
10) Cryptography
11) Robotics
12) Grid computing
13) Social Network Apps
14) Mining Social Network Data
15) Data Generalization
16) Search and Search related Technology
17) Opinion Mining in Blogs/Posts
18) Image Processing
19) Image Compression
20) IoT (Internet of Things)
21) Pattern Recognition( ANN, SVM, NN, GA, Fuzzy, SOM)

Tips for making your final year project

Anyway its very common that students have the habit of buying the projects for certain amount and reproducing it in the college. Since everyone does it, I don't complain it is wrong. But I insist that you can also take some efforts to make use of the money you spend over it.

1. Take utmost care in choosing your domain. Also view the above listed domains. You can also choose a project by integrating two or more domains.

2. Discuss with your guide regularly regarding your project.

3. Study the positive and negative effects of the project regularly.

4. Try to google as much as you can (Search for the related papers from popular journals, related ideas, youtube videos, etc.)

5. List out the possible questions in your project.

6. Make sure you have made a proper team (co-operation among members is a must).

7. The opinions of the panel members during the review must be taken seriously. Usually there would be 0 to 3 reviews for a project.

Don'ts in a final year project

1. Don't ever reproduce someone's (especially your senior's) project as it is. Try to make some changes in it. You can either introduce a new concept or even change in the algorithm is more than enough.

2. Don't roughly believe whatever the project center says. Just google or converse with your guide to sort it out.

3. Don't spend excess money which isn't actually worth for the project. For instance, in a particular center a project may costs rs.7000 and in others only rs.5000.

4. Don't choose a project just because it sounds nice, have a deep study on it.

5. Don't copy the documentation from the other previous records.

Uses of a final year project

The simple purpose of the final year project is that students would then be able to implement something on their own. The students would come across the different ideas, opinions from the other projects. They actually come to recognize the corporate work.

Even during your interviews, particularly at the Technical round there will be a question on your mini project or your final year project. The interviewer will rate you based on your project domain, its originality, its applications, etc.
